The History Of Sandpiper Cove Marina

Sandpiper Cove Marina was developed in the mid 1970′s as a result of the USS Hazard being moved from Dodge Park to its current location.
Upon completion of the move of the USS hazard, dredging started in the marina’s current location to provide sand for the new runways at Epply Airfield. Dredging was completed in 1978 and the marina, know then as the Omaha Marina was formed by the Hazard Corporation.
Only Pier 1,2 and a partial pier 3 were in existence at that time. The gas dock was located on the river in front of the Anchor Inn.
During the flood of 1983 the gas dock and tank were washed away and never replaced on the river. In 1983 the marina was leased by Dan Albertson and the name changed to Sandpiper Cove Marina and Service Center.
In the years to follow a service center, gas dock and piers 4-11 were constructed and paved parking lots were added. The marina has been through numerous tornadoes, extremely high winds, floods and low river conditions, surviving all with little to no damage.
The worst flood was in 1983 when the river reached 30.3 feet bringing the water all the way up over the existing roadway and completely submerging the viaduct that separates the river from the marina today.
The marina is the oldest existing marina in the Omaha area on the river today.
